I am excited to be running this year’s Newport 10miler on June 2nd as part of The Herren Project team in honor of my two late cousins, Dennis and Richie. Many of you have probably heard of THP and its founder Chris Herren, author of Basketball Junkie. The organization’s mission is to support, inspire and empower those affected by substance abuse disorder.
THP was an important resource for Dennis and his family throughout his struggle with addiction. After Dennis died in 2013 Chris personally reached out to the family to offer his condolences. Richie was always grateful for the help provided by Chris and THP and he himself began to work full-time on behalf of those struggling with addiction, even referring people he worked with to The Herren Project.
Growing up, my sisters and I were always very close with our cousins, their 3 boys balancing out our 3 girls. They were brothers we never had! The Dennis and Richie I grew up playing sports/vacationing/getting into trouble with would probably be embarrassed and would find some way to make fun of me for even doing this, only as brothers would! But I know how much they both valued this organization and its mission, and I am running this race in honor of them.
Chances are you too know someone battling addiction, and it is organizations like THP that can help bring peace to them and their family. As is often the case, excellent services like theirs come with an often burdensome cost that insurance does not usually cover. I have set a fundraising goal of $500 and I hope you will consider donating to this very worthy cause; truly, no amount is too small. Please feel free to share with anyone else who may be interested in donating.
