I have been accepted to run the New York City Marathon this year on November 3rd. I am part of a team from a charity organization called Komera who provide financial support for girls from Rwanda pursuing post-secondary and university education. In order to take part I need to raise $4,000 in just under three months! Any support big or small would be much appreciated. I also understand if you cannot provide financial support at the moment either way your good wishes and generosity will help spur me on to the finish both literally and hopefully financially.
In Rwanda, Komera means “be strong, have courage!” Komera develops self-confident young women through education, community development and sport. Komera started in rural Rwanda to assist girls who have the courage and desire to pursue secondary education but who lack the resources to do so. As a leadership incubator, Komera invests in inspired young women taking action toward self-empowerment. Funds raised from my marathon will support programs to provide opportunities for young women to achieve their goals!
As a parent myself of two university aged children I cannot imagine a situation where my daughter does not have all the opportunities she needs to become the strong, educated and independent women that she is capable of being. I hope you will consider this a worthy cause for those of us from countries privileged with and equal opportunities education system to give back to others.
Damian’s Marathon Journey
As many of you may know I have been a runner for many years. It helps me decompress and deal with the frustrations and anxieties of life in a positive way as well as keeping me physically fit. Over the last few years I have stepped up my game to the point where I am competing in four half marathon’s this year. The one goal I have not achieved so far is running a full marathon. The training time needed for a race of this length has been an impediment considering I have a full time job with a lot of travel commitments. However when I was offered this opportunity I real felt it was a once in a lifetime chance so despite reservations I took it (after a weekend of much soul searching that my family had to endure). Check out the race site (https://www.tcsnycmarathon.org/plan-your-race/run-in-2019 )
I now feel I have two very challenging but achievable goals with your support. Be ready to run (42.2km) and raise $4,000
Every dollar makes a difference with Komera!
$1,250 gives a young woman a 1 year university scholarship
$750 funds a 1 year Secondary school scholarship and all school & personal supplies
$500 provides tuition for a 1 year Secondary School scholarship
$250 provides a woman with 3 months of computer training
$100 sends 1 young woman to a week-long leadership summit
Thanks for listening and your future support.
