Please help KIPP Comienza's 4th grade class go on an end of year field trip to Catalina Island to commemorate the end of 5 years at KCCP-LS. The total cost of the trip is $28,600, and our goal is to raise at least $10,000 of that through crowdrise! A donation of any amount is welcome. To sponsor a child, you can donate $260.
Our Story KIPP Comienza was founded in 2010 on the streets of Huntington Park. Our founding school leader and teachers approached families, asking parents if they had a child who was going into kindergarten. They explained that they would be opening up a College Prep Charter School and made a promise to families that, if they enrolled, their students would have a better chance of going to college.
Two years later, our school earned an API of 978, making KIPP Comienza the third highest performing school in LAUSD. After much hard work and dedication, our students, teachers, and families could see our promise becoming a reality. We have continued to deliver on that promise year after year with over 80% of our students meeting or exceeding standards end of year state assessments. We are now a 2017 "exemplary high performing" National Blue Ribbon school and a California Distinguished School. These honors were awarded to the KCCP team for our consistently high student achievement, strong school community, and close relationships with our families.
As our staff pledged on the streets of Huntington Park, KIPP Comienza's mission is to provide students with rigorous academic instruction coupled with character development and learning experiences. It is these experiences in which our students build the character they need to be successful in life. Our students have been able to go on many local field trips that have opened their eyes to the community around them in Los Angeles, but the reality is that many of them have never been outside of LA. As their final field trip, we would like to take our students on a 3 day, 2 night trip to Catalina. This trip will give our students a learning experience that is outside of their community and provide them with the opportunity to explore nature and apply what they've learned at school, firsthand.
At the CIMI Outdoor Science School in Catalina, they will participate in hands-on courses, including Marine Biology, Oceanography, Ocean Mammals, and Island Ecology. Students will also participate in activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking. These courses and activities complement the Fourth Grade Science Standards that our students have been held to.
When we founded our school in 2010, we recruited families by discussing the current realities for students in Huntington Park. About 50% of them graduate from high school. We explained to families that this shouldn't be the case. College readiness should not be determined by the zip code you are born into. Similarly, our students should not be held back from learning experiences just because of where they live. Our students’ hard work merits this field trip. They deserve the chance to apply all they have learned over the 5 years they have been at KIPP, from academics to character, in one final learning experience.
