I joined HAVEN in 2016, before the #metoo movement, before the Kavanaugh interview and investigation but NOT before all of this was prevalent in our society.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced some form of sexual violence. This is a statistic, but let me make it real for you. Since joining HAVEN in 2016 I have many acquaintances, friends and complete strangers disclose to me that they have been a victim of sexual violence. I don't ask. They have a need to be heard. This is a PROBLEM in our society. Like it or not. Want to talk about it or not.
Please help me be a part of the solution. HAVEN takes a 2 pronged approach to stamping out domestic and sexual violence.
HAVEN educators come into the classroom and teach about healthy body image, they teach about proper relationships and what that looks like, and in the most relatable way they teach that RAPE IS NEVER OK.
HAVEN reaches out and helps those victimized. Advocates meet the survivor wherever he/she is in the process. Whether it is accompanying someone to the hospital, holding their hand as they tell their story to the authorities, guiding a victim through the restraining order process and/or give them shelter when needed, HAVEN is there. HAVEN teaches those that have been effected how succeed on their own. They provide access to money management classes, help with the job search process and aid in getting survivors financial and emotional support.
