The 15th Annual Backpack Giveaway and Neighborhood Concert on August 6, 2021 is more than a festival; it's a celebration of Life, Hope and Love. We go extra hard because our people deserve an extra kind of love! We have been able to impact thousands of lives and have been motivated to impact those lives by caring for our community more than any organization or local government has ever shown.
The Backpack Giveaway is by no means a solution, but is part of the process of restoring the humanity to our people who have been buried alive in "Third-World Hoods". We do this through our initiative of Restoring The Neighbor Back To The ‘Hood. We intentionally host this amazing event in one of the most oppressed neighborhoods in Detroit at at the Mama Akua Community House on Ferry Park. We invite people from all over the City to come out and experience the family affair and to break bread as neighbors.
Due to the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic we will have backpacks for pickup or delivery on two days in August. Details to follow.
On August 6th we will host an outdoor concert for families and residents as well as provide a meal to go when backpacks are pickedup at the Mama Akua Community House on Ferry Park.
For the last 13 Backpack events before the pandemic in 2020, Restoring the Neighbor Back to the 'Hood hosted residents on the street Yusef grew up on, creating an atmosphere of peace, love and hope through activities such as children open play (bounce houses, festival games and more) creative mobile arts, live performances (2 open live stages), fresh healthy food, workshops, and back packs/school supplies! We are eager to return to this experience next year. In the meantime we will have two limited sized children days, one on June 20th and one on July 31st where we are hosting the Exotic Zoo and other more Covid-19 safe events.
The Annual Backpack Giveaway and other events is about relating to the community in a positive way where we all begin to relate to each other in a positive way despite being trapped in a war zone. This is how we transcend our conditions. We see this as working to stabilize our neighborhoods by having boots on the ground committed to "Restoring The Neighbor Back To The 'Hood!"
