Running the Boston Marathon has been on my bucket list since I was a baby. My grandmother lived on the route, and every year we would stand out with our orange slices, cups of water, and encouraging signs and cheer on the runners. As I got older, every year I would watch in awe and say, ‘next year that’ll be me’. But as life went on and things held me back, that year never came. So last year I thought, I’m done having kids and I’m not getting any younger, 2018 will be my year. So I scoured the internet for the best way to get a race bib, and that’s when I came across the charityteams.org website, which then led me to the 15-40 Connection.
I knew nothing about this organization a year ago, but the minute I clicked on their website, I knew I wanted to run for them. The 15-40 Connection raises awareness and education on the cancer conversation and how to listen to your body and talk to your doctors when you know that something seems off. And this is exactly my story. In 2012, exactly five years ago this fall, I knew something wasn’t right, and I spoke to my doctor about it. There was something going on with my breasts and the pain and discomfort didn’t seem normal. It turns out, my instincts were right, and luckily for me, my doctor didn’t brush me off. At 31 years old, she sent me for a mammogram that saved me from what could have been a long road with breast cancer. The mammogram found microcalcifications that turned out to be cancerous. I was able to have a single mastectomy and reconstruction in a few short months, and then start moving forward.
I am so excited to be running the 2018 Boston Marathon and to be raising money for the 15-40 Connection because I believe wholeheartedly in their mission. My goal is to go well beyond $7500, so please help me get there!
