12th Annual Backpack Giveaway: Neighborhood Festival
The 12th Consecutive Annual Backpack Giveaway and Neighborhood Festival on August 4, 2018 is more than an event; it's a celebration of Love, Hope and Self-Determination. We go extra hard because our people deserve an extra kind of love! We have been able to impact thousands of lives by giving a damn, and with the support of the people from different walks of life.
Donations will go to support the following: 1) Backpacks, 2) School supplies , 3) Food (hot meal provided to each attendee as well as hot dogs and snacks all day long) 3) Children’s activities (bounce houses, games, art projects, face painting etc), 4) Live performances, 5) Water supply, 6) Prizes , 7) Portable stage , 8) Porta John, 9) Preparing the site for the event, 10) Dj & Sound system, 11) Photographer
The Backpack Giveaway is by no means a solution, but is part of the process of restoring the humanity to our people who have been buried alive in "Third-World Hoods" through our initiative of Restoring The Neighbor Back To The ‘Hood. We intentionally host this amazing neighborhood festival in one of the most disenfranchised, politically exploited and economically neglected neighborhoods in Detroit at Yusef "Bunchy" Shakur mother's house.
We invite people from all over the City to come out and experience the family affair and to break bread as neighbors. On this day on Ferry Park, the street Yusef grew up on, becomes an atmosphere of peace, love and hope through on-going activities such as children open play (bounce houses, festival games and more) creative mobile arts, live performances (2 open live stages), fresh healthy food, workshops, and back packs/school supplies!
The Neighborhood Festival is relating to the community in a positive way where we all begin to relate to each other in a positive way despite being trapped in a war zone, but slowly and surely transforming it into a peace/liberated zone. This is how we transcend our conditions. We see this as working to stabilize our neighborhoods by having boots on the ground committed to "Restoring The Neighbor Back To The Hood" of repairing the social levies that has been broken as a result of disenfranchisement, political exploitation and economical neglectfulness by investing not only into our neighborhood(s) but the people with resources and values. Your support is critical to making this event happen each year.
