11th Annual Health Celebration - Help India Breathe!
Since 2011, you all know now that I have run a race for charity every year following a spinal surgery I had to prevent paralysis in my legs in 2010 and now as a previvor of breast cancer. I look forward to this event so much, as being a dancer and athlete has been such a huge part of my life. The past fundraisers have been devoted to completing various running challenges across the country. Can you believe that as a community we have raised almost $20,000 for a multitude of global causes?!
Last year's race looked different, as COVID hit our planet, and I fundraised for the crisis response in New York. The last year also came with a big change for me personally. I left my job running a mobile psych unit in New York, to become the Director for the Kennedy-Satcher Center Mental Health Equity at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. While the US starts to open up again, my heritage home of India is experiencing a second wave of the COVID-19 crisis at unprecedented proportions. My family has been directly impacted, and I feel like I need to do something. I can't call myself a leader in the health equity field, and ignore that India needs oxygen and relief.
India is currently experiencing 1,000,000 cases every three days. India's reported death toll has crossed 300,000 deaths, but experts are acknowledging this may be a gross underreporting due to the flooding the system is experiencing. Healthcare resources have been completely depleted, and there is a dire need for oxygen and other supplies to be sent to the country. I will be running a cumulative 19 miles from June 7-June 18 while I fundraise for Give Foundation India, an organization leading the charge to get needed supplies and oxygen to Indian citizens.I know our community is still recovering from last year, so I totally understand if financial support is hard for you to do. There are two ways you can join this year's Health Celebration: by donating to the fundraiser or you could also choose to run your own miles wherever you are! It does not have to be 19, it can be however much you want. You can share your miles online between June 7-June 18 by using the hashtag #MJRunsForIndia. Let's virtually do something to celebrate our own health and wellness and help get India to recovery.
Thank you for all your continued support over the years! Much love!
