Join me in bringing solutions to end human trafficking around the world! Help me make Los Angeles a better city!
I recently came back from visiting artisans and producers in Haiti during this global pandemic. I witnessed firsthand how COVID-19 and the unrest of the nations have created a detrimental effect across developing countries. Customer orders have taken a huge hit, businesses had to scale back, and many workers were let go. So what does that mean for workers all around the world?
I spoke to a widowed father of five daughters in the rural village of Haiti. He said there is no more work for him right now. He used to work in a sand mind for $3 a day, barely scraping by. But his body is now too weak, especially when he has spent days without food. He has been buying food for the girls on credit from a local market and currently owes around $7 USD. Yes, SEVEN US DOLLARS. With no income, they are feeling more vulnerable than ever. His house had no locks and people would come in to steal anything they had. So now their house lays bare with an old mattress for their whole family. The young daughters are all scared to be in there alone. This is the perfect storm where human trafficking happens. Out of desperation, parents will reluctantly send their children away to work as child labor or be sold to traffickers.
I knew I had to step in. I purchased and installed secure locks on the doors of his house. Our team also helped him start his own business so he can take care of his own family.
But how many millions of these stories are out there that we don’t know about? How many parents are feeling so helpless that they would rather send their kids away than to see them starve at home?
I don’t ever want to take for granted the privilege of having secure shelter, food on the table, and a comfortable bed to lay my head at night. I also feel a personal responsibility to share these stories and be the voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves. I am so honored to serve as the Executive Director of Fair Trade LA and have this platform to share and raise awareness for the most vulnerable people around the world.
Through your giving, Fair Trade LA will be able to continue the work in bringing solutions to ending trafficking. This year 2020, FTLA officially made Los Angeles (a trafficking hub) the largest Fair Trade City in America and the fourth largest in the world! Read our full Press Release here.
But our work has just begun.
I invite you to partner with me on this journey in making Los Angeles a better city.
Let’s remember 2020 for all the good we did for the world!
