We started All Seated in a Barn in April 2018, with the idea that we wanted to rescue horses and donkeys who were destined to slaughter. It started with one donkey and 9 stalls. It has since, in 2.5 years, grown to several rental properties and amazing fosters who take in and help us rehabilitate them until they are mentally, physically and emotionally healthy enough to be adopted out to their forever homes. It takes a lot of hands on love and hard work, all of which ASIAB is all about, LOVE and HARD WORK. For those who follow us on our social media stories, we do our best to show you that and express that. From the adoptions, rehabilitations, tears, losses, and accomplishments.
We are now in a position where it is more beneficial for us, and the horses and donkeys, to OWN one piece of land, instead of continuing to rent properties. To have all of the horses and donkeys on ONE piece of land would not only make it easier to manage, but it would give us an ARENA, an area for us to host public events which help generate not only awareness but additional donations to help with the care and expenses that running a rescue like ours takes. It gives us the room to DO MORE with the community. To get more involved, to help in ways that we haven't been able to help. We have this vision of bringing the community into what we are, which is all about saving horses and changing lives, and really TAKING THAT CONCEPT, and changing not only this industry, but showing WHAT these animals can do. THEY CHANGE LIVES.
THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY
This industry stresses me out. Damned if you do, damned if you dont. I don't know how to fix it, but what I do know how to do, what we know how to do at ASIAB is HELP the horses and donkeys who need it. We have the heart, we have the drive, we have the passion, and we have the ability to make change, and WE ARE. To date, we have saved almost 500 horses and donkeys, including some who stay with us, sanctuaried forever.
So, the way this industry works: It is ILLEGAL to slaughter horses in America, but it is LEGAL to ship horses and donkeys FOR slaughter. There are what are called 'kill pens' set up around the United States with contracts to slaughterhouses in both Mexico and Canada. Two of the kill pens with USDA contracts to ship to Mexico, are Bowie and Stroud. They have what are called 'Direct Ship' horses which leave weekly on semi trucks to holding pens on the boarder, where the slaughterhouses semi trucks then pick them up and take them to the slaughter plant to process the horses and donkeys.
When horses are shipped for slaughter, they spend 24 hours at a time without food, water, or rest in crowded trucks. Then they’re forced to suffer through repeated blows and are sometimes left conscious during dismemberment, according to the Humane Society of the United States.
Horse meat is consumed all over the world, and donkey hides are used in a very popular tea in China. The kill pens will then showcase some of the horses and donkeys online to make extra profit if they are able to sell them, which they then use to buy more horses and donkeys at auctions, Craigslist ads, via flippers etc.
What happens is, these kill pens function, essentially as pawn shops. People show up and they weigh their horses and donkeys and offer them money for them, based on their weight. They also go to auctions and buy up the cheaper horses and donkeys to fill their semi truck loads to Mexico and Canada so that they make a bigger margin. Cheaper horses = a bigger profit margin. The sad truth is, that in buying from these kill pens, you are putting more money back into their pocket which they use to buy more horses, and the cycle continues.
HOW TO STOP IT
This is a hard one. For me it is education, education, education. Educating owners that when they go to the auction to sell their horse, that it very well might end up with a kill pen buyer. That in posting your horse for cheap online, it might get bought by someone who goes around purchasing horses to flip at auctions or that just might be the kill pen itself, buying the horse or donkey. ASIAB, alone, cannot make change. It is everyone coming together, to work TOGETHER, to educate, take in horses and donkeys, buy them at the auction before they end up in the wrong hands.. I honest have no sole way to stop it. Getting the bill passed to make it illegal to export them FOR slaughter is how to start, that is for sure! For that you can head to the link below, provided by the Humane Society, to see ways you can help get the bill passed and make this change happen!
We are just trying to make change and help. These horses don't deserve to be where they are, whether that is AT the kill pen, running through the auction, being seized by animal control, sold on Craigslist, rounded up by the BLM.. they do NOT deserve that. They aren't this soulless, heartless, consciousless being -- they HAVE SOUL, they HAVE HEARTS, they have a conscious! They deserve a damn chance to live their lives in a healthy and loving environment. Somewhere they can be appreciated and let TO LIVE.
You wouldn't take your family dog or cat to the butcher shop, taking horses there shouldnt be an option.
Please join us in making this property happen, so that we can continue to make a difference, spread awareness, and help MAKE CHANGE in an industry that almost seems impossible.
