This week is all about helping kids and ensuring children’s hospitals have the funds they need to care for more than 10 million kids a year. Government and insurance programs don’t begin to cover these costs; that’s why donations are vital to children’s hospitals. I'm asking you to be a part of the solution. 30 years ago, I was treated in Oakland Children's Hospital when diagnosed with Childhood Leukemia. I cannot begin to describe, words just simply aren't adequate, with regards to the extraordinary care I received, from nurses, doctors, social workers, physical therapists, psychologists, clerks, and so many more people who devote their life to helping children. It is the single biggest factor that led me into a career in non-profit fundraising. I just had to give back because I was so fortune to have such amazing resources during my time of need. I was a very needy patient. Newly DX and starting chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Add to that having just had emergency spinal surgery & laminectomy, leaving me a paraplegic, who had to fight to learn to walk again. It didn't help that I was in Cali spending the summer and was 3000 miles from home either.
This week, I got a letter from a former staff person at the hospital. I hadn't seen nor heard from her in 30 years. She was reaching out after finding a letter I sent to her upon returning to NY that awful summer. She saved that letter, and sent it back to me this week. She wanted to know first, if i was still alive, and then about my life since then. It made my day. MADE MY WEEK. It motivated me to honor all those caregivers and try and raise some money to help those facing treatment today and in the future. I immediately reached out, shared everything about my life and pictures from my time in Oakland. There is one other nurse who I keep in touch with on FB (n pic below), the only other person so far I have been able to find. He lives in TX and we keep promising each other we will see each other in person again. I hope there will be more. BUT one thing I know for sure, is there will be more of sick children, who will battle everyday, to survive and conquer and hoepfully go on to do big things in their lives!
If you can, please make a small (or large) donation to help today's kids who are fighting for their lives, through no fault of their own.
