There are over 11,000 children in foster care in New York City, and many of them face unique and complex challenges in their efforts to become successful, self-sufficient adults. Much is needed that cannot be provided by government funding, and New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) aims to provide youth with the support, guidance, and opportunities that every child deserves.
NYFC's 2014 Highlights
$50,017.20 was distributed to 35 young people by The Charles Evans Emergency Educational Fund to help youth formerly in care who encounter unforeseen financial emergencies.
326 laptops were provided to youth in foster care as part of the 760 Back to School Packages sent in 2014.
75 Back-to-School Packages were sent to youth who have aged out of the foster care system, a new addition to the program.
Over 75 teenagers in foster care volunteered at the 2014 Wrap to Rap program, which provided over 1,000 gifts to children in foster care during the holiday season
The Youth CAN! program doubled in size in 2014, and now has had 30 participants to date. 70% of participants moved into internships as a result of the program.
The 2014 Spirit Award recipient, Jermaine, was provided with a $10,000 scholarship to pursue his educational goals, in addition to the two runners-up, who received scholarships of $2,500 each
