Thanks for visiting my fundraising page and making a donation!
When I decided to run the NYC 2016 Half Marathon I could have chosen to run with a variety of charities. And, in looking over all my options, I realized there are so many important causes out there. Picking one actually seemed unfair.
However, ultimately I chose to support Austism Speaks. Autism is a disorder that is not only growing in diagnoses (+30% since 2014; now 1 out of 68 children) but it's also one that eludes us. Children are being diagnosed late -- the average age of diagnosis is over the age 4, even though it can be diagnosed by age 2. The earlier a child is diagnosed with autism, the better their chances are of overcoming the difficulties that come with the disorder, and possibly even losing their diagnosis altogether.
Furthermore, defining what constitutes the Autism spectrum is also debatable and access to support and services is inconsistent. These decisions impact the trajectory of children all over the world. We need to better understand the diagnosis process and create awareness for it so that children get the attention they need as soon as possible.
For these reasons, I pledged to raise money to increase awareness, conduct more research and provide more services through Autism Speaks. Thank you again for your support and donation. To learn more about Austism Speaks and Autism, please visit: https://www.autismspeaks.org.
