BENEFITING: Northwest Avalanche Center
A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to our Spring Fund Drive!
Without question, this past winter was a tough one for all of us who love to play in the snow. In fact, some of our weather stations recorded the least amount of snow in our 30+ year history of forecasting. While the most frustrating aspect was the impact on the winter recreation that we all love, the impact on NWAC’s fundraising was also significant.
NWAC relies heavily on events and donations from the community to support our daily forecasting and education programs. Generating support for avalanche safety when there is no snow in the mountains is quite a challenge. Traffic to our website was down, attendance was down at the events we didn’t have to cancel, and media coverage was non-existent. The lack of a winter, cancellation of events, and general lack of excitement has resulted in an anticipated budget shortfall for the year.
Please help dig us out so we can get back on track and continue to improve our programs next season. Our plans include:
- Hiring a 4th forecaster: With all of the recent website improvements and additional observations from the pro observer team, the forecasters are producing more accurate forecasts than ever before. However, managing all this great new data and forecasting for a HUGE area is stretching the forecasters and not allowing time for additional projects. The time has come to hire a fourth forecaster to spread out the workload and further improve our forecasting products.
- Completing phase two of the mobile app: We delivered the avalanche forecast to you via our new mobile app this winter. Phase 2 of the app will include photo observations, the mountain weather forecast, and weather station telemetry data.
- Expanding our youth education program: We ran an avalanche and snow science field course with Mt Baker and the Bellingham School District this winter, and we want to expand it to other school districts in the near future.
With your help, we can get back on track, put this miserable non-winter behind us, and start focusing on next season!
