Those of you who watched the Ken Burns special "The War" on PBS will recall that Waterbury, Connecticut, and its citizens and factories, was one of the three cities chosen to represent the World War II years. As portrayed in the film, the factories of Waterbury ran 24 hours a day producing for the war effort and many of her native sons joined the fight overseas. Now Waterbury, like many of our nation's great manufacturing cities, has fallen on hard times, the landscape dotted with derelict factories, the soil contaminated, the tax base drastically eroded. Our public schools have seen budgets slashed, and funding for music and art programs has been drastically reduced. The North End Middle School Band has been playing with old and beat up instruments for some time.  Recently their music teacher, Mr. Ray Santovasi, arranged for his students to participate in a special program offered by  R.S. Berkely, a well respected manufacturer of quality musical instruments.   This program afforded his students a chance to play instruments that really worked, as well as receive a lesson from a practicing professional musician.  As shown in the picture, the children loved having this opportunity, if only for a few weeks.   I would like to raise the money necessary to purchase some new instruments for the North End Middle School. I think the children should have a chance to play instruments that work properly, especially after having had a taste of what that feels like. I think if we all pull together we can do this.
