A North Orange County program for adults with developmental disabilities needs your help. This program will meet the needs of the developmentally disabled population in this area that is not currently being met.

My name is Courtni Laughlin and I am 23 years old. I graduated in May from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in Child and Adolescent Development. I’ve been working in the special education field for the last 10 years. I’ve volunteered at my church with the kids with special needs, I was an aide in the special day classes all through Jr. high and high school, I’ve worked for the Placentia Yorba Linda school district as well as the Orange school district for the last 6 years working as an aide in SDC classrooms, and I am also employed through 24 hour home care where I assist adults with special needs in the local community. These last two years I was also given the opportunity to go to Nairobi, Kenya to help develop a special education program in the slums of the Matharae Valley.

About two years ago I started researching what programs and services were out there for adults after they leave the public school system and after their continuation program. I came to realize after many observations, tours, and talking to parents that there was a definite need for an adult day program that continued the adult’s academic skills, life skills, social skills, and provided extracurricular activities to keep these adults engaged. This is when I began to develop No Limits Learning Center. No Limits Learning Center will meet the needs of the special needs population that are not currently being met. We will provide a safe, loving, and educational environment that parents will feel comfortable dropping their kids off to.

Our mission is to provide educational opportunities to people with developmental disabilities through delivering a broad range of specialized programs and services.

Our vision is to provide outstanding opportunities for daily living skills for those who are seeking self-improvement, enhanced independence, and possible future access to employment.

We will prepare our consumers to be effective communicators, lifelong learners, and responsible citizens.

No Limits Learning Center will offer site based programs for adults with special needs between the ages of 18 and 59. Our program will provide classes including Creative Expressions through Dance, Art, and Music. Healthy living which includes nutrition and fitness. Sign Language to enhance communication skills. As well as, a daily life skills course necessary for independence.

This program will greatly benefit the special needs population here in the North Orange County Area and we are close to opening our doors BUT we need your help! We are a non-profit organization with limited funds. We have gone through the conditional use process through the City of Placentia, were approved by the city and Orange County Fire Authority to occupy our facility at 300 E. Orangethorpe, and now are having to fight both of those organization to open our doors. After being given our signed permit to occupy our facility, OCFA went back on their word and wanted to categorize us in a different occupancy code. This new occupancy code requires us to install fire sprinklers which our facility does not have. I have put over $50,000 (part of which was the money my parents had been saving up for my wedding as well as money my fiance had been saving for a downpayment on a house) in this facility and do not have the funds to install fire sprinklers or find a new facility to start all over again. I have been fighting this issue for over 3 months now. I am in desperate need for your help! I want to bring awareness to the public that two organizations, OCFA and The City of Placentia, who should be supportive of this type of program, are doing everything in their power to shut us down before we even have a chance to open our doors. I also need help in raising funds to keep our doors open, cover overhead costs, and possibly even pay for the instillation of fire sprinklers. I am so desperate and would do anything to keep this greatly needed program from shutting down.
