THE STORY:

Family and friends - Thank you for visiting my NYC Marathon fundraising page!

Race day - Sunday, November 5th

Please support me in my endeavor to run 26.2 miles through all 5 boroughs of my home New York City and raise $3000 for New York Cares- an incredible volunteer organization serving the greater NYC community who I have been volunteering with and leading projects for over the last two years.

1. $3000 - Fundraising Goal

2. 4:00:00 - Race Goal

$3000 - Fundraising Goal

I have pledged to raise $3000 by Nov. 5th (race day!!!) for an absolutely fantastic volunteer organization that has become a very important part of my life over the last two years living in The Big Apple- New York Cares. In short, New York Cares is one of the best and most meaningful parts of my life and it's a real joy and honor to have the opportunity to run my first marathon as a part of this team, and raise thousands of dollars for this great cause in the process. More on my experience below. Check out the organization here: https://www.newyorkcares.org

For those of you who are unaware, I spend many of my weekends as a Team Leader for a variety of New York Cares volunteer projects. Since January 2016, I have volunteered over 180 hours of my time on over 60 projects. Earlier this year I was honored to receive a Presidential Service Award for my efforts in 2016.

The core projects / community partners I have found a home and volunteer with most regularly with include InTandem, an organization for visually disabled cyclists riding through Central Park; NYC H20, with whom I have now led 5 beach clean ups; West Side Little League- Challenger Division, a baseball league for young adults with various special needs and physical disabilities; Special Olympics, with whom I have worked on Softball, Basketball, and even Bowling leagues; and Habitat for Humanity house builds in Queens. Other projects I have worked on are all over the map from St. X Homeless Shelter Cleanup to activity night playing Dominos with Diabetic patients at Coler Hospital to 9/11 Day of Remembrance 500,000 meal prep, even to LES Risk Prevention (serving at-risk addict population in Tompkins Square Park and promoting safe sex practices passing out condoms to the out and about crowd of St. Marks Place- heck of an experience...).

4:00 - Race Goal

The last part was the exciting warm and fuzzy part. This is going to hurt. This is 26.2 miles at a 9:09 minute pace, which is what I've been training at in my long runs but having spoken to a number of marathoners, you never know what your body might do come mile 22 and onward.

Ben Booker: A Runner's Life, Kind of

Running became a part of my life running distance on the track team in 6th grade. I wore glasses and was generally awkward/nerdy/skinny-ish/ not the stocky, burly 28 year old 5'9 former boxing contender you know and love today. I kept with the track team through high school (but transitioned to sprints) and then "road work" became a regular part of my boxing regimen at UNC, especially during training season when I was required to run 6am 5Ks and speed work every Mon/Wed/Fri.

Since college I have continued running for casual exercise. Everywhere I have lived after graduating I've had a go-to run spot. In Sarasota it was the Siesta Key beach, and then Bayshore Avenue in Tampa. Then after moving to NYC it became Central Park for my two years in Hell's Kitchen, and then for two years in the East Village it became the Williamsburg Bridge, and now in Brooklyn I run all over the damn place on account of marathon training but often cross back into Manhattan over that same bridge which provides a hell of a view and some of the only hill work you can find in NYC.
