THE STORY:
Here’s a quick story: One day a cute little girl woke up with a stomach ache that turned out to be appendicitis. After a quick operation, the little girl was pain (and appendix) free, but she still had to spend a few nights at the hospital. Thankfully, a giant, jolly man by the name of Santa Claus came to visit her, giving her a water gun and a Nerf ball and all sorts of hospital-inappropriate toys that made her forget she was sick.
This story is definitely not typical. Many hospital residents and individuals living with chronic illnesses like HIV/AIDS don’t have a Santa Claus-- or anyone at all-- to offer them companionship during what may be the toughest time of their lives.
That’s why New York Cares volunteers visit isolated and lonely hospital residents. They drink mocktails, play music and games, and knit sweaters with patients. We try to turn their time in the hospital into one giant party!
In order to keep these parties going and give patients something to look forward to though, we do need a wee bit of help. Click on the Donate button and there’s a 100% chance that you’re making life easier for at least one sick person out there.
All donations will support New York Cares' general programming, which provides critical services to 400,000 at-risk New Yorkers each year. For information on making donations to support specific programs, please contact Jennifer.Goldschein@newyorkcares.org.
