"Running changes lives. Running heals."
For me, running has always been a time and place of solace. My greatest ideas and best plans emerge; anger and frustration washes away with the beads of sweat; and each step usually brings me closer to solving a dilemma or just getting my adrenaline fix for the day.
As this is my first New York Marathon and I have been training since months before last year's cancelled marathon, I am both excited and nervous for this experience. Yet with all the tragedies that have happened in our country recently and the Northeast alone, I want this event to be about more than just me crossing another finish line. I want each mile to mean something, to work toward healing an changing someone else's life.
There is no limit to the number of causes I could run for - but I have chosen to stay close to home, very close. The Newtown Memorial Fund is using the New York Marathon training process to bring support and positive energy to the people of Newtown, CT, particularly those who were affected by the events of 12/14/12.
Although I was not in Connecticut at the time of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, having grown up in Easton, watching the events on tv and hearing about them on the radio was scary, confusing and down right terrible. "Something like that doesn't happen where I grew up", I thought. And having continued to coach and and mentor children over the past 12 years, as well as having friends with small children, I could not imagine that heartbreak and devastation, and having to go on again afterwards. So there is no better cause that I can think of to run this year's ING NYC Marathon for.
This year, I am dedicating each mile to one of the 26 Newtown victims, and specifically the last six (and probably hardest) miles to the heroic adults who died to protect those children. I know there is only a week left until the marathon, but please help Newtown heal and help me cross that finish line by contributing any amount you can, small or large, to the Newtown Memorial Fund.
