The author, George Eliot, once wrote, "Life seems to go on without effort when I am filled with music."

Right now, life is crawling along with virtual performances or musicians live-streaming from their basements or kitchens. There is nothing, however, which compares to a live choral performance with sixty singers raising their voices together to perform Bach, Poulenc or Beethoven in beautiful venues or to perform energetic pieces by the Gershwin Brothers, Katy Perry or Rodgers and Hammerstein on a stage.

Choruses have been silenced by the pandemic all over the country and the New Jersey Choral Society, northern New Jersey's premiere choral group is one of them. We have been forced to cancel our annual fundraising event and the final performance of our thirty-ninth season which was scheduled for June 13th.

Despite the current situation, NJCS opted to continue paying its independent contractors - our Music Director, the conductor of our youth chorus and our accompanist . We have been soldiering on with our weekly rehearsals by taking to Zoom once per week. Of course, Zoom is no substitute for the real thing.

So, like many other non-profit choruses, we are continuing to pay our contractors, but will not be taking in any revenue for the rest of the season and we cannot be sure when we will be able to get together again.
