We made our goal!

BENEFITING: Salaam Cultural Center
In March 2016 the 5000th baby was born in Zaatari Refugee Camp in northern Jordan. Many of those were born to first time mothers who have very little in the way of baby supplies. SCM has set a goal to make 200 New Baby Boxes that will be given to new mothers to help them with their newborns. Each kit will contain clothes, cloth diapers, a blanket, knit cap, sweater, booties, and mittens and a variety of other items for the mom and baby. We have a group of super dedicated volunteer knitters and sewers who will be providing the booties, hats, sweaters, blankets, and more. We need your help getting the boxes.
The box itself can double as a bassinet, providing a safe and secure place for the baby to sleep. Many of the families don't have bassinets or cribs and the babies sleep with the parents. The Baby Box contains a mattress, waterproof cover, and a sheet. We have teamed with the Baby Box Company who has created these wonderful boxes based on the Finnish model of providing a baby box to every new mother, a project undertaken in the late 1930s in Finland to help combat the extremely high infant mortality rate. It has been a huge success over the decades, with the infant mortality rate dropping precipitously, and is catching on in other countries. We want to help the most vulnerable mothers and babies in the refugee camps in Jordan in a similar way.
The funds we want to raise will help pay for the Bed Boxes, as well as for some of the other items that don't get donated so that each box is consistent and well stocked. Mind you, a lot of the items are being donated and when all is said and done, these will be amazing and life-changing gifts to the new mothers. Please help us get these boxes to Jordan by this summer. SCM will be sending a container in June and we want the Baby Boxes to be part of that shipment.
