Alexis Junker

My best friend peer pressured me into registering for the Twin Cities Marathon. We went to high school together in Minnesota, and have since both moved away. My 30th birthday is 2 days after the marathon, so she even went so far as to use bucket list guilt tactics ("But Lex, don't you WANT to run a marathon before you turn 30??!!" "No.")

I can't say no to Anne for long, and soon I was registered and training. We chatted frequently about our training plan, long runs, particularly unmotivated days, intermittent man frustrations, work woes, etc. In one of these every day talks, Anne mentioned that she found a lump in her left breast. She's 28, so we didn't really think much of it, but I agreed with her that she should check it out next time she went in.

She went in for an exam. And then an ultrasound. And a mammogram. And then a biopsy. Then at the age of 28, mere weeks before her 29th birthday, my best friend, my Person, my heterosexual life partner, was diagnosed with stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma.

She begins aggressive chemotherapy now, the week of her 29th birthday, the same week she goes back to her second year as an assistant professor at a university in Ohio, a month before we were to run our first marathon in our hometown.

I almost dropped out. Anne wouldn't have it. Anne can't run with me on October 5th, but her upcoming fight is quintuple that of our original challenge - and she didn't choose this one. I am choosing to raise money for research on Anne's behalf, as anyone who knows Anne knows her passion and drive for scientific research. This research just hits closer to home.
