Nestling in Namibia
Organized by: Cassidy Tucker
EVENT DATE Dec 27, 2014
The organization that I am partnering with, WorldTeach, is a nonprofit based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Every year, WorldTeach sends young volunteers to work in developing countries in the field of education. I have been so lucky as to be accepted into this program in Namibia for a year long commitment. However, seeing as I am a volunteer it means I must pay my own way.
Namibia is a very fascinating country. It gained independence from South Africa only 23 years ago. It is the second most uninhabited countries in the world next to Mongolia and is twice the size of California. Namibia is one of the only countries that has incorporated nature conservation into their constitution. It also has a captivating landscape and several native tribes still practicing traditional methods.
Education is something that is very important to me because it allows the connection between creativity and practicality. As one of the pillars of human development, education not only serves the individual but the nation as a whole. Namibia is a country that has a relatively high HIV/AIDS rate. While overseas, In addition to my regular classes, I plan on serving as a HIV/AIDS resource teacher that facilitates awareness programs across the country. Namibia has been very dedicated to the education of its people and has graciously provided my living expenses.
While I have to pay most of my way through this next chapter in my life, it is something I am very passionate about. Since my year in Morocco, I have worked very hard to save for this. The total cost of my year overseas will cost me about $5500. Right now, I have about $2500. The money I am hoping to raise is for my flight (~$1200), half of the program fee ($~1300), and school supplies for my future students (~500).
Each donation means the world to me and to each of my future students. I really plan on going the extra mile during my stay in Namibia. To show my utmost gratitude and include you in my experience, every donation over $25 will be promised a personalized letter, postcard, photos and update from yours truly.
Please help me on my journey towards igniting the spark of education in these wonderful kids!
