THE STORY:

UPDATE, as of May 12, 2015:

Another major earthquake hit a remote mountain region of Nepal on May 12, killing at least 42 people, triggering landslides and toppling buildings less than three weeks after the Himalayan nation was ravaged by its worst quake in decades. Many of the Hilton Prize Laureates are already on the ground assisting with damages from the first quake and now, tending to further damage caused today. Updates on Laureate responses available here

----------------

A powerful, 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal on Saturday, April 25, killing more than 2,300 people in the worst earthquake there in more than 80 years. The epicenter of the earthquake was just 80 kilometers northwest of the capital, Kathmandu, where buildings, walls and many historic sites like the Dharahara tower have collapsed. Nearby, Mount Everest experienced a deadly avalanche and landslide. Other impacted areas include Nepal’s second largest city, Pokhara, Northern India, Tibet and Bangladesh.

As leading global humanitarian organizations, the Hilton Prize Laureates have already begun responding to the devastation caused by the earthquake in Nepal. Immediately after the earthquake hit, Laureate organizations were delivering medical, disaster response and targeted humanitarian services to vulnerable people on the ground in Nepal. Laureates will continue to provide critically important humanitarian services in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Funds raised through this campaign will help support the Laureates in their ongoing efforts to help local populations recover from this devastating earthquake.
