The Motor City Mitten Mission is dedicated to helping the homeless, the needy, the sick and those striving for a better way of life while educating, partnering and collaborating with a number of other organizations, schools, churches, clubs and businesses. We do what we do because it’s the right thing to do!
The Motor City Mitten Mission has gained notoriety for our “Plarn Mats & Pillow Project for the Homeless” in which we have refined and created an assembly line process of recycling plastic bags and crocheting them into sleeping mats, pillows and backpacks for our homeless. To date we have recycled over 1.8 million plastic bags and have engaged over 70 schools and another 100 businesses and organizations to take part encouraging people to “pay it forward”.
Though this initiative is AMAZING in itself, we wanted to ensure that our efforts would directly benefit our most vulnerable population of the chronically homeless and those near homeless including children. The Motor City Mitten Mission is the only non-profit 501c3 organization in the city of Detroit that has a street outreach team that goes out consistently 7 days a week (365 days a year-no holidays off) to serve those that are unsheltered providing basic necessities to the homeless. Our team visits those staying under bridges, sleeping on the sewer grates, along the river, in abandoned buildings and any other place that we can find those that have nowhere else to go. Our organization not only provides our mats, pillows and backpacks, but also provides a hearty meal, survival necessities such as blankets, clothing, hygiene kits, food snack packs, tents, coats, bus passes, bicycles, etc. Through our outreach efforts we also help facilitates and encourages additional services that include medical and dental care, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, procuring housing and job placement. We also have a H2H (Homeless to Hearts) Program that encourages our homeless to volunteer giving back to their own community. To date this program has a 95% success rate of getting people into housing.
Money raised through the QL Community Challenge will go directly to providing meals and to all the other supplies that we provide on a daily basis to our homeless and near homeless friends. In one year we will have provided over 12,000 individual meals to people living on the streets throughout metro Detroit. We are currently a 100% volunteer organization dependent on donations. Our immediate goal is to procure a mobile pantry/food truck for our daily outreach efforts.
The homeless are not invisible. Any one of us can be homeless because of an unexpected tragedy, job loss, divorce, death, etc. It’s so easy to be kind. Please be inspired and help us help others. Together we can make a difference!
