Welcome to my fundraising page! I am VERY excited to be running in the 2016 New York City Marathon with Champions for CHAM. This will be my second marathon (and first in New York) and am counting down the days!
I decided to run with Champions for CHAM for many reasons. The main reason being that my dad, "Jo-Jo" as many know him by, underwent a successful surgery last year at Montefiore - you can see "Joe Sr." (as others may know him by) in all of the pictures on my page. He's seen with my loving family - my mother, Debbie, sister, Lisa, brother-in-law, Joel, two nephews, Andrew and Colin, my fiance (wife if you are reading this after June 4), Maeve, and our puppy Hudson.
In August 2015, my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. His surgery resulted in the removal of his kidney, spleen and part of his pancreas. He's the strongest and toughest guy I know and was able to recover from surgery in just a few weeks, and was back to work in a few months. Maeve, who works in the Office of Development at Montefiore, her co-workers, and the entire staff at Montefiore was instrumental in his successful surgery and recovery. Shortly after the surgery and still to this day, he credits the fantastic staff at Montefiore for saving his life.
It was not long after his surgery, in November 2015, that Maeve and I were watching the 2015 New York City Marathon from a cheer section in the Bronx, NY. I had my "Children's Hospital of Montefiore" t-shirt on and was rooting from the sidelines. It was then I decided i was going to run in the 2016 marathon, with the intention of raising money for a charity, and perhaps one that could help my dad in the meantime.
It was around Christmas time that I brought up the idea to my parents that I would run in the marathon and raise funds. I asked him if there was a charity or organization that he wanted me to fundraise for. In his New York-tough-guy voice (I say "tough-guy" with complete sincerity and truthfulness, given his 200-pound frame, tattooed arms, and Harley Davidson motorcycle in the garage -- a far cry from me and my 155-pound "frame", scrawny arms and Honda Accord in my driveway), he said...,
"give it to the kids!"
It was at that moment that Maeve and I realized that Champions for CHAM was the right team.
I am thrilled to run in the marathon and can't wait to see my pops at the finish line in November!
Thank YOU for taking the time to read my page and donate to a fantastic cause.
Since opening in 2001, the goal of The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore has been to provide children from the Bronx and beyond with the best opportunity to lead active and healthy lives and realize their full potential. Today, CHAM is the only pediatric hospital in the Bronx and the largest provider of healthcare for children from the nation’s poorest urban community. In partnership with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, groundbreaking discoveries by CHAM investigators have led to new therapies, models of care and better outcomes for children. Each year, CHAM services 250,000 unique patients over the course of 9,000 inpatient admissions, 65,000 emergency department visits and 2,000,000 ambulatory care visits.
Thank you for supporting CHAM and our team of dedicated runners! Whether you are racing or cheering, we look forward to seeing you on November 6th!
