Cancer for College's Fundraiser:

Mitchell Friesen

When I was 8, my family and I found out that I had an advanced form of B-cell lymphoma, but did that cripple any of us? No! Thanks to God and support from people across the nation, the crap that is cancer turned out to be the fertilizer for a great life. After more than 20 rounds of chemo in less than 1 year I went into remission and, at the ripe age of 9 ½, began the adventure of living like I have been given a second chance.

To me, that means living life so abundantly that others cannot help but feel personally encouraged. I want to live in the present by combining past experience with future expectations, and this path has led me to Azusa Pacific University. Fall 2014 will find me stepping into my final year as a student studying Business Management and Theology and a 2nd-year Residential Advisor for Leadership House. God has given me the exciting responsibility of showing other students what it means to not hold back their gifts for the sake of others, even during the busyness and stress of university life (and beyond!).

Turning the page on the story that is life, post-APU is rife with opportunities ranging from full-time work, to grad school, to travel. I do not know what the future holds for me, but I recognize my desire to help people maximize their personal and corporate potential through written and verbal encouragement and exemplary working. Through cancer, and life thereafter, God has taught me that life is a gift more joyfully given than received, and that is my aim. Through excitement and the mundane: LIVE LIKE IT MATTERS, BECAUSE IT DOES!
