Hi, friends! Since marathoning is no longer a new challenge, I've decided to take on a new goal- the Flyathlon. I credit my friend, Mike Kuhr, for finding this race and calling my attention to it... it's a perfect "Heidi" race. Instead of a traditional triathlon, with swimming, bicycling, and running- the Flyathlon's three sports are running, fly fishing, and beer drinking. While it sounds like a fun, lighthearted race (which it will be!), it's also going to be pretty difficult for me.
Picture this: your curly Midwestern friend, at the start line, around 7000 ft. I've got my water strapped to my back, along with my rod tube, and a (probably incorrect) selection of flies. I run six miles to the stream, while climbing 2500 feet. I fish, and catch a trout. I take a picture of the trout (for proof!) and let the pretty girl go. I run back to the start, now the finish. Six miles, down 2500 feet, mentally chanting "Don't Fall! Don't Fall! Don't Fall!" I run across the finish line, first place Midwesterner (I'm think I'm the only Midwesterner), and chug a Colorado beer. Since you can't be there, I'll obviously post many photos from the race, but probably only once I get out of the mountains and back to reception. :) This race is a fundraiser for all trouty things that I love- Colorado Trout Unlimited and the Western Native Trout Initiative. These organizations are doing work that I believe in- restoring native trout, preserving wild populations, and protecting the water that we all share. If you could donate any amount, I'd be so appreciative! I want to represent Wisconsin and the Midwest well... maybe we'll organize a Wisconsin Flyathlon in future years! To be clear, I purchased my own flight and race registration- 100% of the money that I raise goes to those water-lovin' organizations.
In 2015, this event raised more than $20,000 for projects with a focus on native trout. Race weekend involves volunteering, and many past flyathletes come back to help, as well! If you'd like me to share a list of the many worthy projects that have been funded by this race, I'd be happy to! Please consider contributing to my campaign to help protect Colorado's coldwater rivers and streams. Since CTU and WNTI are 501c3 organizations, your donations are tax deductible. run. fish. beer. donate.
As always, thank you for reading and for supporting me on my adventures. I anticipate my best race experience yet!
