On October 1, 2016 a mobile protest was initiated by Disabled People Outside Project and First They Came for The Homeless ( https://www.facebook.com/firsttheycameforthehomeless/). Since then the protest named Snubbed By The Hub – Poor Peoples Tour -2016 has been evicted at least ten times. Each raid costs the City approximately $30,000 and is characterized with escalating levels of violence and illegal seizure of private property. Each forced eviction inflicts a huge loss of survival items (tents, blankets, warm clothing) as well as physical and emotional trauma on tour participants. The tour maintains the only homeless emergency shelter in Berkeley (citizen & resident supported) that operates on a no drugs or alcohol 24/7. Our simple inclusionary process makes sure all are welcome to food, and shelter. Not all can stay, this is a protest for HUMANITY and closed to troublemakers In response to the deteriorating physical health of the participants our volunteer Nurse practitioner strongly suggests we establish an on-going medical presence with in the tour. We embrace this common sense solution recognizing it will save lives. As such it is our intent to establish a medical clinic on-site which will be staffed by health care volunteers 24 – 7. This will provide us with the ability to respond to medical needs of the community immediately. In situations where conditions require a level of treatment that can’t provide onsite we will provide transportation to the nearest medical facility. We are asking for your personal help to save lives by donating something even as small as $15.00 or $25.00. As always we encourage you to share this campaign with your friends, family members, work place etc. Together we can and will address this developing, horrendous health crisis.
