BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
I'm thrilled and honored to be running the 2015 Boston Marathon on the Mass General Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Team! Yes, you heard me correctly! This event gives me and all of you the POWER to fight pediatric cancer. Every dollar raised is directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients, one in particular who's near and dear to my heart!
On July 29, 2014 I was one of the 46 moms who heard the words "YOUR CHILD HAS CANCER." When I think back to that day the words still echo in my head as if someone were screaming them at me over and over again. Our happy, beautiful two year old son Caden, who was having belly aches, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a cancer of the bone marrow and blood. Our world was rocked and we were devestated. How would we move forward? What would we tell his 5yr old sister Callie anxiously waiting for us to come home from a very long doctor's appointment? We felt powerless!
Thanks to the amazing Pediatric Oncology team at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC), Caden celebrated his 3rd birthday on November 29th and will have many more to look forward to. We are forever greatful for the loving care, support and guidance our entire family continues to receive from his entire team at MGHfC. Caden feels like a rockstar every time he walks into the clinic. He's developed an incredible bond with the team and constantly asks when he's going to see them again.
Caden benefits directly every day from the funds raised by the MGH marathon team. The cure rate for his type of ALL has increased to over 90%, a result of cutting edge research and clinical trials. The child life program, made possible by funding, has enhanced his quality of life while undergoing treatment. Within weeks of visiting the clinic we watched a little rockstar emerge, all while his cancer disappeared! His love for the guitar and drums is shared and encouraged by the music therapists every visit. Clinic to Caden has nothing to do with medicine and being sick, but everything to do with music and fun. Check out the video attached to my fundraising page of the music therapy team jamming with my little drummer and Ario, a former patient, on the electric guitar. This is how you receive chemo at MGHfC!
Caden has a very long, challenging road of treatment ahead. He'll be running his marathon for the next 3.5 years. Please consider a donation to show Caden I can do this mere 26.2 for him!
