First off, I am thrilled to be running the 2016 Boston Marathon with the Massage Therapy Foundation! I am so grateful for this opportunity to participate in the John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Program that will help bring more awareness to the benefits of massage and the need for more massage research funding.
As a runner, I know the value that massage therapy brings to my training regimen. Injury prevention, injury treatment, improved flexibility and recovery are all various reasons I regularly partake in massage therapy. Running is hard on the body, and whether I’m receiving a deep tissue massage after some serious hill or speed work, trigger point therapy to help sort out tough, troublesome muscles along the way, or relaxation massages after a tough 20-mile run, the benefits that massage therapy bring to my life and training are enormous. Massage therapy is just as important to my training as the progressive runs I schedule over a four or five month training bout.
The Boston Marathon has always been a dream of mine. I progressed slowly into running marathons: a few fast 5k’s get you pumped for a 10k, a handful of 10k’s turn into training for a half marathon, running several half marathons elevate your excitement and bring on a new challenge as you quickly realize that the full marathon is both conquerable and achievable. And before you know it, you’re a sub 4-hour marathoner training for your milestone 15th full marathon. And what better time and place to run a 15th marathon than the 2016 Boston Marathon?! Running and qualifying for this race are goals that runners work their entire lives to reach. I am so thankful for this opportunity to showcase my talents while raising money for such a wonderful organization.
Running marathons would not be possible without the support of regular massage therapy. Along with the numerous health and wellness benefits, the re-assurance I get from the consistency of massage therapy is immeasurable. I feel exponentially better after each and every massage thanks to the increased blood flow my body receives. The release of endorphins also always reduces lingering soreness that carries throughout each and every training season.
I’m also thankful to work for Performance Health, a company that helps support health & wellness through its various lines of massage, rehab & wellness, and fitness products. Foam rollers, roller massagers, kinesiology tape, compression wraps and other products play a key role in helping my body prepare and recover for the large amount of stress regular marathons put on my body. I’m thankful to utilize all of these products in conjunction with massage therapy, yoga and other cross-training to keep my body healthy and in shape.
The Massage Therapy Foundation is giving me an opportunity that people can only dream of achieving. Running the 2016 Boston Marathon means more to me than words can truly express, and I am beyond grateful for this opportunity.
I look forward to sharing my joy of running and proper training & recovery with everyone, and I hope that you all can help support me on this journey!
