EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
I started running five years ago; then, I was diagnosed with cancer shortly thereafter. Imagine my excitement on the eve of the anniversary of my diagnosis when I received the phone call that I would be one of the three runners chosen to run the 2016 Boston Marathon on behalf of the Massage Therapy Foundation. It doesn’t get any better than that! I’m five years cancer free and going to run in the Boston Marathon. I have run many races over the past several years, but this is THE BOSTON MARATHON, the most prestigious race in the world! And the icing on top of the cake is that I get to do this for an amazing cause.
I have been a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, which founded MTF, since I began practicing massage almost 10 years ago. These two groups are committed to advancing the massage therapy profession through promoting scientific research and evidence-informed practice. The MTF is able to do this through fundraising events, such as the Boston Marathon.
I am SO grateful to have the opportunity The John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Programs has granted to MTF. With these three charity bibs, we have been given a platform to promote massage therapy as a profession, talk about the numerous benefits massage has for those who receive it, and finally, it gives us the chance to raise money to provide the means for research to grow the profession. You may ask, so why is this important? This opportunity to raise funding goes directly to help massage therapy research. Commonly known benefits of massage include stress reduction and circulation, but with research dollars we have been able to discover massage can also help with medical conditions such as peripheral neuropathy related to chemotherapy.
This is especially important to me not only as a cancer survivor but as a massage therapist, a supporter of MTF and a member of AMTA. If you receive massage and know the benefits, are a massage therapist or if you just want to support me, then this should also be important to you. So, I ask you to give generously with an open heart and open mind. Donate to Team MTF and bring awareness to the massage therapy profession and the benefits of massage.
I AM A SURVIVOR. I AM A RUNNER. I AM A MASSAGE THERAPIST. I AM TEAM MTF.
