The Mary Beth Benison Foundation Inc. is an official 501(c)3 non-profit established in 2016 in memory of Mary Beth who passed away from ALS on May 3, 2015 at 53 years old. Over a 15 year period Mary Beth was diagnosed with a brain tumor, breast cancer and in 2014 two terminal illnesses, mesothelioma and ALS. Her ability to remain strong and positive through it all was inspiring to many. Of all the health challenges she faced, Mary Beth said ALS was by far the worst and cruelest disease. Mary Beth was an extremely loving and compassionate person who always wanted to find a way to help others. So MBB was established to honor her memory.
The MBB Foundation's primary mission is to provide financial assistance to ALS patients and their families. We do so by providing grants of up to $1,000.00 to help pay household bills, (rent, mortgage, oil, electric, car) or to help with household repairs or modifications, to pay for medical services or equipment not covered by insurace or to help a family go on vacation. As of March 2019, we have provided over $61,000.00 in grants to 67 families.
Through our MBB Cares For Kids program we provide mini grants to children of previous grant recipients. We provide grants to help purchase back to school or winter clothing, contribute towards school tuition or to help with holiday purchases.
In addition, when funds are available we will also provide financial assistance to any Massachusett resident who has cancer or a terminal illness and needs assistance.
We understand the financial burden a family faces when a loved one is sick. When a person is diagnosed with ALS the cost of care is astronomical. Often times a family loses one or even two sources of income because a spouse/partner/family member becomes the primary caretaker. It is our goal to continue Mary Beth's legacy of kindness, love and compassion and #SpreadTheLove while we do it.
