Mannakin Theater and Dance Mission Statement
Expand the scope of people touched by the practice and performance of dance. Create and produce work of drama and dance that engage audiences in unique and moving ways.
Founded in 2013 by Nathan Cottam, Mannakin Theater and Dance has produced professional performances in the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, Palace of the Legion of Honor, Piedmont Center for the Arts and on tours in California, Utah and the Republic of Serbia. The company has been invited to perform in multiple domestic and international dance festivals, including the Sterijino Pozorje Drama and Arts Festival in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The current project is an augmentation of the ballet outreach program that Mr. Cottam started in East Palo Alto in order to bring ballet instruction to youth of this historically underserved community. Seventeen young dancers received weekly classes and were featured in a performance at the Youth Club at St. Francis summer party. The success of this program led to the institution of En Avant Dance Studios, the only classical ballet program in EPA. Students of En Avant have been on stage with MTD at the SF War Memorial and Performing Arts Center and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
Internationally, MTD conducts annual outreach to refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and surrounding areas, who are in the refugee camps of Bulgaria. These programs have led to dance classes for over 80 young children in the camps and have brought many of them to the stage for the first time in productions of Peter and the Wolf and The Three Little Pigs.
