Michigan Medicine

Starting a family can be one of the most joyful and life-changing steps for a couple, but sometimes the journey to parenthood is fraught with challenges. One in every eight couples have trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy.

Women often blame themselves for their inability to get pregnant, but the numbers show infertility is equally caused by male problems (40%) and female problems (40%). In 20% of infertility cases, the cause is never discovered.

Infertility does not discriminate based on race, religion, sexuality, or socio-economic status. It is not an inconvenience; infertility is a disease of the reproductive system that impairs the body’s ability to perform the basic function of reproduction.

The Michigan Medicine Center for Reproductive Medicine is working to eliminate infertility for many couples. Using a multidisciplinary approach, U-M fertility specialists provide the highest level of patient care with a complete range of advanced technologies and treatments by a compassionate, highly skilled medical staff in state-of-the-art facilities.

While advances in research, treatments, and technology continue to evolve, the isolation that couples face while on their journey to parenthood continues to be a challenge. Some of the most important aspects of care offered at the Center for Reproductive Medicine are related to the emotional toll of infertility.

You can help.

In honor of National Infertility Awareness Week from April 22 – 28, 2018 and the ongoing struggle against infertility many patients face, donate to valuable patient support resources to tackle ongoing, and often, universal issues such as anxiety, stress, isolation, recurrent loss, etc.

Your generous gift can support a patient’s efforts to build their family while providing crucial access to the best possible tools and resources to address their personal needs:

• A $10 gift can fund a book for check-out from the patient library within the Center for Reproductive Medicine clinic.

• A $25 gift can fund streaming access for a patient to a library of guided meditations for relaxation and wellness to help with issues such as stress, anxiety, sleep, etc.

• A $50 gift can fund a kit to aid grieving patients who experience a loss of pregnancy.

You can also help change the dialogue and remove the stigma around infertility. Share the story of your journey with others, have open conversations, and use your social media channels to build awareness. Together, we can alter the way the world views those struggling to become parents.
