Lucha Latina Scholarship
Organized by: Laura Sandoval
According to The American Association of University Women, “Hispanic girls have a higher school dropout rate than other racial or ethnic groups.” Many believe that the reason for this is a lack of support from home or a lack of experience in the home with higher education. This creates a lack of confidence in young Latina women who feel like they cannot leave their home in search of an education for which they are unable to fund. For this reason, many of these young ladies are not seeking help during school or may not know how to ask for help. Many of these women would be first generation scholars who have not been exposed to the possibility of earning a higher education. Unfortunately, more often than not, these women can’t rely on their families for emotional nor financial support in order to thrive in the ways that they should.
By creating a scholarship fund The Lucha Latina Foundation aspires to become a launching point for Latinas in their senior year of high school looking to pursue a degree. Essentially, the foundation strives to empower a new generation of minority women who seek out a higher education. Although initially, this scholarship will be relatively small in amount, we encourage a lot of applicants to take the initiative to apply. Eventually, we plan on incorporating a selective award system where the foundation will reward those young Latina women that stand out; encouraging their success and acknowledging that their futures are worth investing in. The monetary component of this scholarship is just as important as the confidence and reassurance we are trying to instill. The Lucha Latina Foundation believes in providing these young women with small stipends, to best help supplement the needs that often go unheard of and are therefore neglected as a whole. Much of the success that is attributed with attending a university as a minority has to do with the support system that they often have to leave behind in order to succeed. We plan to provide methods of support and encouragement beyond the scholarship itself. The scholarship hopes to provide Latinas with a stipend that could be used for the purpose of transportation, nutritional nourishment or other needs indirectly tied to academia. After having an opportunity to return home during semester and/or holiday breaks, many of these women will be able to gauge how far they've come and thus be re-energized to return to school with a newly restored sense of accomplishment and drive.
We thank you for your support and hope you decide to join us in this Lucha Latina. Wishing you all the best, Team Lucha Latina!!!!
