“I want to do something special this year, or even 20 years from now. I want to stand out sometime. That may be the reason I’ve decided to become a doctor when I’m grown. Most kids think that’s stupid, even you may be thinking that too as you read this. But, I want to help. Anything! I can help clean up my neighborhood, wash away mean words written on walls, so no one has to be reminded of the hate that lingers in this world. I’m getting off point. Anyway, I want to help the class community, or help raise money for starving people. I want to become more active in peacemaking, and helping people make the right choices. I want to help save endangered species. I want to discover the cure for cancer, and save lives. I just hope I get the chance.” - Hallie Geier, age 10, 2003
LOVE, HALLIE was founded after a tragic accident took the life of 11 ¾ year-old Hallie Geier on May 15, 2004 -- Hallie was struck by an SUV in front of her home while walking her dog -- a fraction of a second of horrible luck. Three hours later, Hallie’s life was over.
But Hallie had just begun to make her powerful and positive impact on the world. Immediately upon arriving home after the accident, her family discovered this inscription on the first page of her kindergarten notebook:
PEOPLE BE NICE TO EACH OTHER. LOVE, HALLIE
In the coming weeks, they discovered more than a thousand other essays, poems, and artwork that inspired them to team up with family, friends, and colleagues to create LOVE, HALLIE Foundation to give young people the practical tools and resources they need to get and stay involved in the causes that matter to them, to find meaning and joy in their own lives, and to connect to others doing the same.
