It's Amanda Shannon, Founder of the Lily Grace Foundation (LGF). We are an award-winning 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and our mission is to support children & families who have been affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other neurological differences through resources, education, and programs. I am passionate about this foundation for two major reasons:
1.) It is named after my own amazing daughter, who was diagnosed with Autism at age 3. Lily Grace is now 14, and continues to be an unfailing source of inspiration for me in ALL that I do.
2.) I LOVE the children and families who are in this community (Autism Spectrum Disorder/ASD). The parents/caregivers fight hard and tirelessly to find resources and programs to recover their children from this neurological prison. They do so in hopes that their child has the same opportunity of any other neuro-typical child, to live up to their very best potential. The kids? They deserve the most credit as they work harder than any child should ever have to, for the sake of fitting into a world they don't understand - our world.
We started the foundation in Denver, Colorado, and are proud of the impact we made while there. In particular, we developed a program called Relaxation Station. This is a sensory-based yoga program we developed and offered to center-based Autism Spectrum Disorder classrooms in the Jeffo County Public School System. I am grateful to have been a part of this program. In developing and teaching it, but most importantly, to have witnessed the positive impact it had in the lives of all the children who participated in it.
Recently, LGF has relocated its home base to Tampa, Florida. This level of transition seemed to be a perfect time to review how the foundation can make the biggest impact in supporting the ASD community. 2020 has certainly started as a year of expanded vision for Lily Grace Foundation. Upon thoughtful review, we have decided to broaden our services and programs and offer them online to support the global autism community.
This new vision incorporates all the knowledge we gained from past services and programs, but more importantly, on the needs we see taking shape in the present and even more so in our not so distant future. World wide, the rate of Autism continues to rise - with no end in sight. The infrastructure (meaning in education, public space and social acceptance/awareness, mental and medical support, and intervention) does not support the current ASD population, let alone address the newly diagnosed and those being born every day.
Our first project in our greater vision will be to create a reproducible MINDFULNESS ROOM. The space will be 10x10 and offered online to any school, church, community space, or business.
What is a Mindfulness Room?
A mindfulness room is a dedicated stress-free space that infuses calmness & peace of mind. This tranquil and relaxing environment also provides techniques and tools for relieving anxiety.
Benefits of mindfulness:
-Better focus and concentration
-Increased sense of calm
-Decreased stress and anxiety
-Enhanced physical and mental health
-Improved impulse control
-Increased emotional regulation
-Enhanced empathy and understanding of others
-Development of natural conflict resolution
Pepin Academies is a forward-thinking charter school located in Tampa, Florida. Their mission is empowering students with learning disabilities to maximize their potential in a positive therapeutic educational environment. Visit http://pepinacademies.com for more information about the school.
They have created the space at their Tampa Campus to offer two mindfulness rooms. We are seeking your generous contribution to support this cause. The total cost per room is $7,500 with a total of $15,000. To view the slide show presentation of what the room will entail, please visit our web site at www.lilygracefoundation.org.
In supporting the implementation of these two rooms at Pepin, you will also be supporting the broader vision for Lily Grace Foundation in allowing us to develop and then offer a Mindfulness Room package online. I believe all neurologically diverse students should have this level of support within their schools and organizations.
If you have questions or would like to have a conversation, please reach out to me via email, and we can set up a time to talk. My email is: email@example.com.
