BENEFITING: LEGAL SERVICES FOR NEW YORK CITY
ORGANIZER: LEGAL SERVICES FOR NEW YORK CITY
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
This November 6, I will be running the New York City Marathon on behalf of Legal Services NYC. As the largest provider of free civil legal services in the United States, LSNYC has improved the lives of low-income New Yorkers for almost 50 years. Last year alone, LSNYC provided essential legal assistance to over 80,000 New Yorkers living in poverty.
Although poverty in New York City is not always visible to many of us, the number of individuals living in poverty in our city is staggering. With the federal poverty line still set at an income of $12,000 per year for an individual, 1.7 million New Yorkers live at or below the poverty line, and 3 million New Yorkers live at or below 200% of the poverty line (i.e. over one third of our city's 8.4 million residents). With so many struggling to make ends meet and no shortage of legal challenges facing these vulnerable members of our community, having access to legal services can make a tremendous difference in low income New Yorkers' ability to get by.
As a member of LSNYC's associate board, I've had the privilege of working with the organization’s tireless and inspiring staff on several cases. From defending tenants against unjustified eviction proceedings, to obtaining legal protection for victims of domestic violence, to providing relief from relentless and unscrupulous debt collectors, LSNYC is on the front lines fighting for justice every day.
Access to justice is among the most critical issues of our time—and it doesn’t always get the attention that it deserves. Our Constitution promises equal protection of the laws for all, but without legal assistance to help vulnerable members of our communities to know and to defend their rights, the promise is hollow. Your donation of any amount will help to make justice a reality for the New Yorkers who need it most.
With your help, I am going to raise at least $3,500 for LSNYC. Please join me in supporting this worthy organization and helping to provide greater access to justice to those who need it most. Thank you for your support!
