BENEFITING: ARMY RANGER LEAD THE WAY FUND
ORGANIZER: ARMY RANGER LEAD THE WAY FUND
Immediately after I ran my first NYC Marathon last year, I called my best friend, Leslie Guyer, to tell her all about it. She asked if I'd ever run another one again. I quickly said no. Then after some thought, I told her the only way I would commit myself to it again is if we ran one together. In my state of delirium I figured that she would never do one anyway, even though it has been her dream for years. :) The history behind it is that we used to run one race a year together for almost 10 years. Then, we both started families and our kids took over our time. It became harder and harder to find time to plan get-togethers, let alone running a race.
In early February, Leslie told me her husband Matt was going to be deployed again but this time the circumstances were much more different. In the past when Matt was deployed, the two were recently married without any children. This time around, Matt will be leaving behind 3 kids, all under the age of 5. The youngest, Penn, whom just turned 1 in January.
On a random day this March before Matt left for training in Texas, Leslie mentioned to me out of the blue that she wanted to run a marathon. She actually said, "Hey Roo, would you want to run a marahton with me?" My response was quick and to the point, "NO". Then, I immediately remembered the promise I made to her last year. However, I only agreed to do so under one condition: we had to run the best marathon in the country...THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON.
It would be a bit challenging because we had already missed the lottery to enter. After some researching, we found the Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund. This organization a 501c3 non-profit organization established to raise funds in support of disabled U.S. Army Rangers and the families of Rangers who have died, have been injured or are currently serving in harm’s way around the world. Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund will provide spouses and children of deceased, disabled or active duty Rangers with assistance for health/wellness programs and other financial services determined to be vital to the family’s well-being, beyond what the government and Veterans Affairs can offer.
They allowed us to enter in support of Matt (even though he isn't a Ranger, it's all family). It is our way of giving back, saying thank you, and supporting all military. So after all these years, Leslie and I will be running together again and fundraising as a team. We are both extremely grateful and excited to run for such a great cause!
Anything you can do to support us means so much to us, whether its by coming to cheer or donating. Every donation will go towards supporting the Army Rangers and their families and supporting us running the marathon.
Here is an excerpt from Leslie's fundraising page:
I am so excited to announce that I will be running the TCS New York City Marathon this November in support of the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund. I've chosen to support this charity because I wanted to support a military-related organization, as the military has meant so much to my family. My husband, CPT Matthew Guyer, is currently deployed to the Middle East and Central Asia with the 116th Military Engagement Team.
Matt and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for more than 11 years. We have three children under five - Easton, Emmy, and Penn - and while Matt has deployed previously, this is our first deployment as parents.
Running a marathon has been a long-time goal of mine. I've completed several half marathons and I believe training for my first marathon while Matt is deployed overseas will give me the drive and motivation to not only cross the finish line on November 6, but also to raise money for the amazing non-profit, Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund.
Having a husband deployed, I know this is just one small part I can take in supporting Soldiers like Matt, and I'm honored to run for such an incredible charity. Helping support this organization will make this experience even more incredible.
