For the past 30 years, National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) has been providing veterans and active duty personnel the legal representation they deserve—free of charge—at the time they need it most.
NVLSP has trained thousands of lawyers and non-lawyer advocates representing veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and military discharge review agencies, arming them with knowledge of veterans law and winning techniques and legal arguments. NVLSP is the principal trainer for The American Legion, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the federally-funded Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program.
NVLSP’s publications are designed to increase the pool of advocates available to veterans and their families and to empower advocates in the effective representations of their clients. We produce the following: The Veterans Benefits Manual (VBM), Veterans Benefits Advocacy DVD, The Basic Training Correspondence Course on Veterans Benefits and our quarterly newsletter - The Veterans Advocate. The first two of these four publications are published through Lexis Law Publications.
Since 2007, NVLSP’s groundbreaking Lawyers Serving Warriors® (LSW) program has been providing pro bono legal representation on claims for federal disability benefits to veterans from all eras. In the last year alone, LSW has screened and placed cases for more than 500 veterans with a volunteer attorney from our national network of more than 90 large private law firms and corporate legal departments
NVLSP currently represents thousands of veterans around the country and works to ensure that these men and women receive the federal benefits they have earned through their military service. Our track record is strong. Of the hundreds of cases that NVLSP appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for veterans claims each year, 90% obtain a reversal of previously denied claims for benefits or are sent back to correct errors and receive a new benefits decision. Our impact is demonstrated by the major improvements to laws and the payment of billions of dollars in disability compensation to veterans in the past three decades.
Every legal victory means that a veteran will receive desperately-needed compensation that will help them and their families to cope with the physical and mental scars of war. NVLSP does not provide temporary relief…our victories last a lifetime.
