Laura N. McLoughlin was a woman who spent her life making a difference and making her life count. She was a tireless and compassionate advocate for hope who believed in the human spirit and spent her life trying to make the lives of others better.

Laura was a dynamic, fierce and loyal friend. She believed strongly in promoting the human rights of others. When she smiled, you could see the radiance of kindness in her eyes.

When it came to Diaspora Community Services, she was champion, supporter and volunteer. Laura was a dynamo…an “expert’ at organization and logistics. In April 2012, Laura helped to plan a Humanitarian trip to Haiti for Diaspora’s Executive Director, Carine Jocelyn and had been instrumental in planning not only this trip to Centre Medico Social but a previous one as well where the focus was to coordinate a cultural competence in nursing class with the Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing. The trip in 2012, allowed Laura to use her own hands and ideas and she handled all of the logistics. What a trip they had! They stayed in Port au Prince for a few days working at Centre Medico Social and Laura accompanied Carine to a few related meetings. They also ventured to Limbe, a rural town located in the North of Haiti. Luxury wasn’t the focus, but serenity was achieved in appreciating the simple things: watching children run off to school and cows and horses grazing outside of our guest house. Everyone who stayed in the guest house can attest to their adventures.

Laura’s talents and commitment to helping others was put to the test again in 2010 when the last earthquake rocked Haiti. Laura sent letters, obtained donations, shipped supplies and critically needed items to Haiti - all without discouragement but with a sense of optimism and hope. She was kind to the people of Haiti and many remember her interest in making the country better.

In tribute to Laura and her passion for impacting lives, Diaspora Community Services has decided at to create a Tribute Fund in Laura’s name and in her honor. 100% of the funds raised will go to supporting our Girls Mentoring program based at Centre Medico Social. Funds donated will defray the costs of providing mentoring, sexual health programming, Christmas gifts, school fees, and summer camp. Twenty-five (25) girls will be provided with weekly and recreational sessions that focus on decreasing gender based violence, conflict resolution, self esteem and financial literacy.
