I never imagined that running could change my outlook on life and the people around me quite like Back on My Feet has. I have learned to deeply appreciate the struggles that people face in their recovery from addiction and the rebuilding of their lives.
I've been running with BOMF Team Somerville since March 2011. During this time, we've had many "resident" runners who are partcipating in the program in order to move forward. For one reason or another, be it the economy, addiction, legal troubles, etc., our members need us. BOMF instantly embraces, both literally and physically, members and volunteers and makes them instant members of the running community. Through a brand new pair of running shoes and a set of weather-appropriate clothing, instantly, a member cannot be distinguished from a volunteer. And we like it that way. We are ALL the same, we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
Back on My Feet gave me the courage to change my life. Many of us, myself often included, can't look a homeless person in the eye when they pass them on the sidewalk. We think they're lazy or they're an addict or they're mentally ill. We think they just don't care.
But what if they just haven't gotten their running shoes? Help me get them their running shoes. Help me change lives in a real way. Donate whatever you can!
And if you want to run with a BOMF Team - drop me a line! We'll take you any day!
