Immediate Support for Survivors and their Pets NEEDED
Organized by: Amber Ahern
The South Florida Link Coalition aims to fight animal cruelty and community, domestic, and sexual violence by focusing on the obvious but often ignored relationship between the two related issues.
We are receiving hotline calls EVERY day from families who are willing to leave their abusive relationships, seek protection, and BREAK the cycle abuse ONLY IF we can provide shelter and care for their pets while they make this transition. We are in desperate need of pet supplies to provide to our foster parents, money for medications and vet bills (some of these animals are injured by the abuser during the leaving process), relocation funds for pet friendly housing, and more! Your donation will go directly to these expenses.
We are a new and much needed community resource and cannot function without community support from you!
My name is Amber Ahern. I am the Founder and President of the South Florida Link Coalition. I have spent the last several years in a PhD program researching the Link between human violence and animal cruelty and the impact that is has on individuals and families. I am a licensed psychotherapist, with a Masters in Clinical Mental Health a degree in Animal and Human Health, and I have treated a variety of populations, including victims of violent crime. What I found through my work and my research is that animal abuse is a significant public health problem and is an often ignored component of the cycles of violence and abuse. It is my passionate and professional opinion that we can make a great difference to Link issues by addressing this relationship between human violence and animal violence and improving the overall relationship between human and animals. The South Florida Link Coalition is something that I hope you can believe in as much as I do.
This South Florida Link Coalition will provide the training and tools needed for everyone from state legislators to law enforcement agencies, animal humane societies, child protection and human service agencies to participate in multi-disciplinary teams and adapt new cross-reporting methods that link the problems and fight back. This work will help families stuck in bad situations and save the lives of many domestic animals. This is a research backed way to predict and prevent animal cruelty and abuse, as well as recognize the signs of domestic violence. Eventually the goal is to not only change laws and act as south Florida’s designated training and resource center on The Link between animal cruelty and human violence, but to open our own pet-friendly DV shelters (something almost non-existent in Florida), and provide animal-assisted therapy and humane education that will help break the cycles of learned violence.
