THE STORY:
The community of Las Nubes, Panama was devastated last Sunday evening when a freak storm triggered a small landslide that dammed the Chiriqui River and created a lake in the mountains above the village. When the lake was full the dam collapsed dumping millions of gallons of water on the village below.
As of this writing, nine are dead and five missing. These include children. A dozen homes are completely destroyed – another 150 homes are damaged. All bridges to the mountain community are washed out leaving people without food and water. Power and telephone lines are all destroyed. Along with this the greenhouses that are the basis for the local economy are destroyed.
This is a community of farmers – everyone here works their land. Nobody has much and very few have anything to spare. Now many have nothing.
We are part of the community also – there are a handful of North Americans scattered about in the community. Our farm was also hit very hard. But this farm is not our only home and we will be able to deal with our losses. Some of our neighbors will not.
No amount of money will bring a family member back to life. Nor will it replace the home where your family was raised. But it can make sure that everyone has a couple meals a day and there are dry clothes for the kids.
We are working with community members and the churches to ensure that food, water, blankets, diapers, etc. go to the people left on the mountain.
Please give what you can – it will be used immediately to buy supplies.
The Crowdrise system will take your credit card information and charge you a modest processing fee. If you prefer you can send a paypal donation direct to lasnubes@lasnubesrelief.com. Or for people in the Yellow Springs area, you can drop off a check at Wesbanco and the bank will take care of it.
Thank you all for your support. Every bit helps. What may seem small to some of us is a great deal on the ground in Panama.
