We Did It!!!!!
November 12, 2017
Hi. Thanks for considering a donation to sponsor me in running the Charlotte Marathon for Project Purple, a non-profit organization doing great work with families who are impacted by Pancreatic Cancer. As you may or may not know, Pancreatic Cancer is one of the most aggressive and difficult cancers to treat, having a "survival rate" of less than 5%. Its frequency in the US population is on the rise and almost everyone has been or will be affected by this dreadful disease. My father, Ray Tobias, was a victim of PC in 1994, having been diagnosed in January of that year, and dying from it in November. He was 61 years old and a new grandfather, looking forward to enjoying his retirement years chasing grandkids, fishing, and devoting most of his time to charitable work at his church and as a disaster specialist for the American Red Cross. Sadly, those dream and hopes were dashed on his diagnosis and subsequent prognosis, which turned out to be tragically accurate. Two years ago, I found out about Project Purple, a non-profit organization that raises funds through volunteers soliciting donations from friends and family, asking that they sponsor the volunteer in their attempts to run MARATHONS and 1/2 MARATHONS across the country. As a lifelong runner, ( mostly for fitness, but also for enjoyment) this seemed like a great fit for me. I had been looking for a way to make a difference in the fight against this disease and signed up for the NYC 1/2 Marathon as a volunteer runner. Together with my friends and family, I raised $1350.00 for Project Purple, helping in the good work that they do. They are truly a remarkable organization, providing money for research, help with medical costs, costs of living, even going so far as to provide educational scholarships for children of victims. I felt good about my fund raising for them until I met their founder, Dino Verelli at the welcome center for the NYC 1/2 Marathon on 8th Ave. the day before the race. After I met him, I felt GREAT about the work I had done for them and could not wait until I had the privilege and honor to do it again!! That time has come!!!! I have decided to come home to Charlotte and run the MARATHON on NOVEMBER 11 in loving memory of MY DAD, RAY TOBIAS, in the town that he loved so much and the town in which I was raised and taught by him the value of volunteerism and the pleasure of giving of oneself in the service of others. Dad devoted his life to that. The least I can do is, with a little effort (...ok ALOT of effort) run a little race and raise a little money for these good people dong this great work. Sadly, since I ran the NYC 1/2 I have lost another dear one to Pancreatic Cancer, my lifelong friend DWIGHT IRONS, who, like most people who hear this terrible news, lost his struggle in less than a year after diagnosis. So, here is the deal. I will run the CHARLOTTE MARATHON on NOVEMBER 11, 2017 as a PIONEER PARTNER with PROJECT PURPLE, raising funds and awareness for people with Pancreatic Cancer. This is personal. It is also important. If you can donate, please do. NO AMOUNT is TOO SMALL!!! ( I know people say this all the time, but this is actually true.) ALL is appreciated and ALL of the funds raised will go to this incredible organization, doing incredible work for people who are truly in need. THANK YOU, BLESS YOU ALL, and MEET ME IN CHARLOTTE ON NOVEMBER 11!!!!!!!!
