Lanka Nesiah Memorial Fund
Organized by: nagulan nesiah
Lanka Nesiah’s first job, at the age of 18, was teaching Social Science at St. Thomas’ College, Gurutalawa – a church-run Anglican school situated in the hill-country of Sri Lanka providing education to boys from grades 1-12. The school has facilities for both boarders and day-scholars, and also serves a vulnerable population of low-income plantation families with full scholarships.
Upon his death in August 2013, the Diocese of Colombo, on request of the Nesiah family, established the Lanka Nesiah Memorial Fund. Proceeds from the investment of the fund were to be designated towards need-based scholarship for prospective plantation youth at STC Gurutalawa. STC Guru currently serves 602 students of which 450 are boarders. The school has a capacity for another 75 boarders and 75 day-scholars. The demographics of the school are 58% Buddhist, 20% Muslim, 15% Christian and 7% Hindu. It costs US$ 340 (LKR 48,000) per boarder per term, and US$ 130 (LKR 18,000) per day-scholar per term. This scholarship amount includes fees, books, materials and sports but not uniform or pocket money.
Currently, the fund holds a capital fund US$ 10,426 (LKR 1,459,686.38). The interest from the initial target of US$ 10,000 (LKR 1.4m) is expected to provide one residential scholarship. Starting January 2015, we are pleased that one student is being sponsored through the fund. Thank you for all those who have already donated to the Lanka Nesiah Memorial Fund (a full list is below)
As we continue to grow the fund, we intend to expand the reach of the fund to also support day-scholars in Gurutalawa but also include scholarships for marginalized young girls at Chundikulli Girls College in Jaffna, in the north of the country, where Lanka started his early education (when boys were admitted in the primary level). In order to provide three scholarships here, we need a total capital fund of US$21,000 (Rs. 2.94 million). Can you help us make that goal?
Direct payments to the Diocese of Colombo, Sri Lanka account is also possible. Please contact Nagulan if this is preferred.
