Hello friends, family, and community!
As many of you probably know, the various paths of each LA staff member has varied significantly, and ultimately led to the service of youth development through sport. Whether the path was through AmeriCorps (VISTA for 3 of us), social services, or after-school, we have all come to share our experiences and knowledge with the next generation of youth sport coaches and mentors.
At Up2Us Sports we believe that every child deserves to have a caring adult trained in positive youth development as their coach to help them achieve their full potential! But beyond this vision, and in today's context, we have an even more specific goal to ensure young girls have great female role models in their lives.
Research from the Women’s Sports Foundation proves that girls drop out of sports at a higher rate than boys and that girls’ participation is strongly correlated with female role models. We know that today fewer women are coaching: Only 43% of women's intercollegiate teams are led by female coaches. And fewer women are playing: 59% of girls grades 3-5 in urban communities are involved in sports compared to 80% of boys.
The "She Can Coach" campaign seeks to bring awareness to the importance of growing opportunities for women to coach and promote equity in the field for this generation and the next! I appreciate any support you are able to provide to this campaign and am happy to continue the conversation with anyone in any way.
Thank you so much!
