Aeronca L-3 Grasshopper Unit: Air Group One Location: San Diego, California
This Aeronca L-3 is used as part of CAF Air Group One’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) educational program, which gives students ages 12-18 an extraordinary hands-on, aviation experience. The unit would like to install an 85 hp engine in order to increase the carry weight on the aircraft, allowing her to carry passengers. Rides could then be offered to students who complete their A-STEM educational program.
In order to keep the airplane flying, and providing an important teaching tool in their STEM education program, Air Group One has already replaced the aircraft’s propeller, and both of its landing gear struts in addition to an engine cylinder. To give this airplane an increased carry weight, allowing it to participate more regularly in the STEM programming, the airplane needs to have its engine upgraded from 65hp to 85hp. 12 Planes of Christmas represents an opportunity for the unit to raise the $10,000 needed to make the engine swap.
Members of Air Group One are truly making a difference in the lives of many young people, providing them a fun and exciting opportunity to access aviation, and the science, technology, engineering and math principles associated with it. Please help contribute to this aircraft and the educational program it supports.
