Kilometer Kids inspires youth to achieve health and fitness through a fun and supportive running program, empowering children with the knowledge they need to make smart lifestyle choices.
History of the Program
Kilometer Kids is the youth running program of Atlanta Track Club, the second largest running organization in the United States and organizer of the AJC Peachtree Road Race. The program launched in 2007 with one location serving 38 kids. Today, Kilometer Kids impacts more than 7,500 kids in communities throughout the Atlanta region and beyond. It is funded by partners, private donations and Atlanta Track Club.
What's the Benefit?
Kilometer Kids seeks to create lifelong healthy habits in children, instilling in participants the importance of an active lifestyle. Through the program, kids learn that exercise is a fun and rewarding activity, opening the door for physical activity to become a lifelong habit. Based on statistics, establishing an active lifestyle at a young age is extremely important. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there is a lack of physical activity among many children that has led to a 17% obesity rate for children in the United States. By encouraging an active lifestyle with children in the Atlanta region and beyond, Kilometer Kids and Atlanta Track Club seek to improve participants’ health and the alarming statistics on childhood obesity, while imparting confidence, self-worth and drive into all Kilometer Kids participants.
